A recent article in the New York Times seems to suggest it can help. Traditional thinking holds that a physician should never admit a mistake in patient care, since doing so might only provide fodder for a malpractice suit.
But that thinking is starting to change. Physicians and hospitals are warming up to the idea that "Iām sorry" is sometimes the best thing a physician can say. While the policy might seem to be inviting trouble ā admitting mistakes wouldn't seem to help one's defense in a case ā early evidence suggests the net result has been decidedly positive.
